Guion Stewart Bluford Jr.

Guion Stewart Bluford Jr. is an American astronaut and engineer who became the first African American to travel to space. Guion born on November, 1942, in Philadelphia- Pennsylvania. Stewart developed an early interest in science and engineering and pursued his education in those fields.

Guion Jr earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering from Pennsylvania State University in 1964. Guion jr Stewart then obtain a M.A Science degree in Aerospace Engineer from the Air Force Institute of Technology in 19-74, and Ph.d. in Aero space Engineer with a special in laser phy from the Air Force Institute of Technology in 78.

In 1978, Bluford was selected as a NASA astronaut candidate. He completed his training and was assigned to the space shuttle program. On August 30, 1983, Bluford made history by becoming the first African American astronaut to travel to space when he flew aboard the space shuttle Challenger on the STS-8 mission.

During his career as an astronaut, Bluford flew on three additional space shuttle missions: STS-61-A in 1985, STS-39 in 1991, and STS-53 in 1992. In total, he spent over 28 days in space, orbiting the Earth more than 4,200 times.

Bluford retired from NASA and the Air Force in 1993 and went on to work in the private sector as an executive in aerospace technology. Throughout his career, he received numerous honors and awards for his contributions to space exploration and his trailblazing role as an African American astronaut.
